The first two days of the Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival are always hectic – arrival, registration and of course catching up with old friends. But most importantly everyone wants to know who they are playing. The first of the pairings on Monday night was drawn – with the help of Miss Gibraltar 2017 Jodie Garcia – to determine who would play the top seed in this year’s tournament, World No. 3, Levon Aronian from Armenia. His first round game was against Anita Gara from Hungary.
Gibraltar’s Sport, Culture and Heritage Minister Steven Linares, said he was proud to be celebrating 16 years of chess on the Rock and that once again the tournament was “the best open in the world”.
